When Carly contacted me for a family photography session in the Pomona area, I was excited because she said she was excited to work with me. To find that perfect 1:1 match with a client is such an AMAZING opportunity to create beautiful images with a family that will thoroughly treasure them.
The words Carly used to talk about her vision for the session were “authentic” and “real.” She wanted a session where her family could just be themselves (no posing necessary!). My job was to capture moments that felt natural and joyful. This was a cool dip into photo journalism that I enjoyed. I can’t wait to share more of this style with my clients!
Carly and I settled on taking photos at the Cal Poly campus in Pomona, CA. This was awesome because Cal Poly is my alma mater. Because of this, the location was familiar and easy for me to shoot in and direct the family into the best spots. I was totally in the zone.
Because of the excellent vibes and amazing photographer-client chemistry of the day, I didn’t have to do much directing! There’s something super freaking special when clients bring their full authentic and vulnerable selves to their session. What I get to bear witness to is incredibly valuable and quite honestly, pretty priceless. I got to watch the Gomez family hang out with each other and have a lovely day exploring the campus. They were on an outing, not posing in front of interesting things. This made for the best session because it felt like I was authentically capturing what a weekend in this family’s life was like, and now they have this moment that they can look back on forever.
One of the best things about working on this session was the family themselves. Carly, Christian, and Jacob are the absolute cutest family ever! That’s not to mention how clearly Carly and Christian love Jacob and want to cheer him on at every turn. My favorite moment was when the first thing that Jacob did when he got to the Japanese garden was to find the fish in the koi pond. He was SO into the fish, and his parents were right there to hype him up!
